So...  I recently got quite a good deal on the first nine Wheel of Time books by Robert Jordan, but I know little about the series.

Anyone else read any of the books in the series?  Any opinions on them?

Hehe- I've *heard* it's a classic and well-done fantasy series.  I just haven't gotten any first-hand thoughts on it.

Whew.

Well, finally got started on the first book in the series.

Only took 4 months  Tongue

So far, excellent.  Nice wording, very nice premise, and now I finally know where people whose usernames are 'Lews Therin' get the name.

Oh no!

Please don't kill me!

I... I can still be of use to this forum- look, I can make fractal renders!

Okay, that one wasn't very good, but I was nervous!

Just give me one more chance, one more CHANCE!

(I'd like to thank the Academy  Tongue)

But yeah, Wheel of Time.  It's got a cool magic system too.  Guys can make history-erasing funky fire with their minds.

And, in true me tradition, I have celebrated my liking of the series so far by getting a sword from it!

The strangest sword you'll ever see: a bastard sword with the blade of a katana.  Wielded by badass warrior guys who are telepathically bonded to their fireball-slinging wives.  Yep.  Just like the swords in the books, and it's positively brilliant even though you might need to stare at it for a minute to get used to the aesthetics.  Perfect balance, great construction, shiny, etc.

And yay...  Another double-post!

almost like a arabian saber.

what type of steel is the blade?

oh and the fireball slinging wives has me intrigued.

Heehee  Grin

The blade is 1060 carbon steel, and I got a cool bonus that I didn't know the sword had until I saw it and talked to the makers: it's got a differentially heat treated blade like a katana, so it's got a really cool (but faint) hamon.

And yep, fireball-slinging wives.  They live for hundreds of years and can make remote-detonated columns of fire. And as a bonus to fanboys, while they're in wizard school, lots of them have other wizard-girl 'pillow-friends'  Cheesy

your original post about this book obviously left out all the best parts.

because I now want to read this.

also, good choice on the sword.

Carbon steel, with proper heat treatment and a proper hand forging, can be far more then a display item.
Assuming the same craftmanship was put into the tang (not rat tail ewwww).

The katana I posted on here few months ago, is also hand forged carbon steel, with almost no visible hammon,
but the paperwork clearly states that checking the edge with a finger will result in 1 less finger.

Usualy a highly visible hammon = factory stamped / machine mass production.

Lastly, where did you find this?

If you do start reading the series, one warning: the pacing can get very, VERY slow.  Jordan has a tendency to describe everything in extremely minute detail, so there's often an entire 30 page chapter of someone just walking down the road.

Thanks for the compliment, too- I really like the sword.  Got a nice full tang, as well as great balance and very light weight (I think it's just a little over 2 pounds)- took a snap of it as I disassembled it to inspect everything

And cool to know about real hamons- now you've got me looking at pics of real and fake ones and it's amazing how much variability there is in the real ones while the fakes are all just creepy, uncanny wavy lines.

(And here's a pic of the nigh invisible hamon on mine:)

And finally, I got this from Valiant Armory- it's a design by John Lundemo, and thanks to it only being his design rather than an entire custom sword by him, it doesn't cost thousands of dollars  Grin

EDIT: And your katana looks wickedly cool as well.  And yours has the bonus of actually having a razor-sharp blade.  I was too chicken to ask for my Warder to be sharpened.  Still sharp, but not as sharp as a real sword should be.

that is a nice tang, you can see the raw forging lines.

I descided my next sword will not be Kit rae, as originaly planned.

I have my eye on another katana, Tear drop damascus.
Im pretty sure its by United Black, Or shinwa.

I just want to have 1 carbon and 1 damascus.

edit: Holy shit its on sale for cheaper then the carbon version! might get it tm.
